First Place of eVolo’s 2012 Skyscraper Competition: ‘Himalaya Water Tower’

Archivenue just shared a Honarable Mentions entry by Bogdan Chipara for the 2012 Skyscraper Competition hosted by eVolo Magazine.

The first place was awarded to Zhi Zheng, Hongchuan Zhao and Dongbai Song from China for their project ‘Himalaya Water Tower’. The proposal is a skyscraper located high in the Himalayan mountain range that stores water and helps regulate its dispersal to the land below as the mountains’ natural supplies dry up. The skyscraper, which can be replicated en masse, will collect water in the rainy season, purify it, freeze it into ice and store it for future use.

‘Coal Power Plant Mutation’ by Bogdan Chipara

eVolo Magazine recently announced the winners of the 2012 Skyscraper Competition. Established in 2006, the annual Skyscraper Competition recognizes outstanding ideas that redefine skyscraper design through the use of new technologies, materials, programs, aesthetics, and spatial organizations, along with studies on globalization, flexibility, adaptability, and the digital revolution.

This entry here, ‘Coal Power Plant Mutation’ by Romanian architect Bogdan Chipara, was one of the Honorable Mentions and suggests a radically new design approach towards fossil fuel power plants. Continue Reading →

‘Mangal City’ Skyscrapers by Chimera

Design team Chimera has conceived of an incredible series of spiraling skyscrapers for New York’s Hudson Yards that are modeled after the complex ecosystems created by the mangrove tree. Dubbed “Mangal City”, the project is an “urban ecological system” composed of modular pod capsules that shift to adapt to environmental and contextual conditions. eVolo Magazine is pleased to announce the winners of the 2010 Skyscraper Competition. Established in 2006, the annual Skyscraper Competition recognizes outstanding ideas that redefine skyscraper design through the use of new technologies, materials, programs, aesthetics, and spatial organization. The award seeks to discover young talents whose ideas will change the way we understand architecture and its relationship with the natural and built environments.

The Jury of the 2010 edition was formed by leaders of the architecture and design fields including: Mario Cipresso, Kyu Ho Chun, Kenta Fukunishi, Elie Gamburg, Mitchell Joachim, JaeYoung Lee, Adelaïde Marchi, Nicola Marchi and Eric Vergne.
