MVRDV Start Construction of Business District at Shanghai Hongqiao Airport

Sincere Property, MVRDV and Aedas have started construction on a Central Business District at Shanghai’s mostly domestic airport Hongqiao. The 4.5ha site is located near Hongqiao Airport train station at the corner of Shenhai Express Way and Shenbin Road. The plan comprises ten office towers, an underground shopping centre, cultural program, parking and a sunken plaza which will bring a more intimate form of urban life into an area currently dominated by large boulevards and urban expressway’s. Completion of MVRDV’s Glass Farm in Schijndel

This shop and office complex by Dutch architects MVRDV is disguised as an old farmhouse, but its walls and roof are actually made from glass.

The building is located in the market square of small Dutch town Schijndel, where MVRDV partner Winy Maas grew up. The town suffered damages during World War II, and Maas has been campaigning since the 1980s to replace a destroyed structure in the space between the church and the town hall. Continue Reading →

MVRDV completes Book Mountain and Library Quarter Spijkenisse

Today MVRDV‘s Spijkenisse Book Mountain and the adjacent residential neighbourhood will be opened by Prinses Laurentien of the Netherlands. Manifesting itself clearly as a mountain of books on the towns market square, it is both an advertisement and an invitation for reading. Clever stacking of the buildings commercial functions produces its pyramidal form, which in turn, is wrapped in the libraries 480 meters route along bookshelves. Underneath the libraries barn shaped glass envelope the book gains a strong educational presence in this formerly agricultural community located close the docks of the Port of Rotterdam. The adjacent Library Quarter consisting of 42 social housing units, parking and public space is also a project by MVRDV, together with the Book Mountain it forms an exemplary eco-neighbourhood. Baltyk Tower, Poznań: first MVRDV project in Poland

Dutch architects MVRDV have unveiled plans for an 18-storey tower in Poznań, Poland, with staggered floors like a giant staircase.

Investment corporation Sophia Sp. z.o.o and MVRDV present the Baltyk Tower, to be realised in the Polish city of Poznań. The office tower with a total surface of 25.000 m² will be located at Rondo Kaponiera at the Eastern entrance to the historic city and will feature retail and a panorama restaurant with a proposed one room hotel. Construction start of MVRDV ‘Glass Farm’

Rotterdam-based architectural firm MVRDV just shared with us the start of the construction of their ‘Glass Farm’ project located in Schijndel, The Netherlands.

In 1944 the small Brabant town of Schijndel which is the birthplace of Winy Maas suffered from Operation Market Garden bombings resulting in an oversized market square. In 1980 the then 20 year old Winy Maas urged the mayor to fill in the gap. Today Rembrand developers, the town of Schijndel and MVRDV start construction on the Glass Farm, a multifunctional building in the village square. The building with a total surface area of 1600m2 will contain shops, restaurants, offices and a wellness centre. The exterior is printed glass with the motive of a typical local farm; 1,6 times larger than life. Construction will be completed in December 2012. Continue Reading →

‘Living Architecture’ – Holidays in Modern Architecture

Living Architecture‘ is a new not-for-profit organisation set up to revolutionise both architecture and the UK holiday rental business.

Five holiday homes by architects Peter Zumthor, MVRDV, NORD Architecture, Hopkins Architects and Jarmund/Vigsnæs Architects are nearing completion in England as part of the project initiated by writer Alain de Botton.

Designed to shake up both house-building and the holiday rentals industry in the UK, ‘Living Architecture’ plans to build one house per year after the completion of the first five buildings. Continue Reading →

MVRDV’s ‘China Hills’ – a Vision of Future Cities

Saturday 28th of November the Beijing Centre for the Arts will open the exhibition “Green Projects II, Three Dimensional City: Future China” featuring work of Paolo Soleri and MVRDV. Construction Starts at MVRDV’s Rotterdam ‘Market Hall’

On November 18th, the mayor of Rotterdam, Ahmed Aboutaleb and city councilor Hamit Karakus have officially started the construction of the new Rotterdam Market Hall. The arched building located in the centre of Rotterdam, developed by Provast and designed by MVRDV is a hybrid of public market and apartment building. Completion is set for 2014.
