This year’s Pavilion is the 10th commission in the Gallery’s annual series, the world’s first and most ambitious architectural program of its kind. The UK Pavilion at the 2010 Shanghai EXPO expresses British creativity and environmental engagement at the biggest event of its kind since the EXPO phenomenon began in 1851 with the Great Exhibition at London’s Crystal Palace. Since then, there have been more than 50 EXPOs – which have also been known as World’s Fairs or World Expositions – and the most spectacular have included those at Chicago in 1893 and Paris in 1900. The Jury of the 2010 edition was formed by leaders of the architecture and design fields including: Mario Cipresso, Kyu Ho Chun, Kenta Fukunishi, Elie Gamburg, Mitchell Joachim, JaeYoung Lee, Adelaïde Marchi, Nicola Marchi and Eric Vergne. Main theme of the 2010 World’s Exposition ’Better City – Better Life’ as well as the theme of the national participation under ’Fruits of Civilization,’ had inspired the creators of this winning design to create an imaginary urbanized countryside.
