The committee presiding over Chicago’s Navy Pier has unanimously selected a team headlined by James Corner Field Operations — the landscape architecture firm that designed New York City’s High Line — to redesign the iconic Chicago tourist attraction. Corner’s plan for Navy Pier calls for developing a raised park around the existing Ferris wheel, installing hanging gardens inside the Crystal Gardens pavilion, and adding a swimming pool with a sandy beach on the southern side of the pier. Construction start of MVRDV ‘Glass Farm’
Rotterdam-based architectural firm MVRDV just shared with us the start of the construction of their ‘Glass Farm’ project located in Schijndel, The Netherlands.
In 1944 the small Brabant town of Schijndel which is the birthplace of Winy Maas suffered from Operation Market Garden bombings resulting in an oversized market square. In 1980 the then 20 year old Winy Maas urged the mayor to fill in the gap. Today Rembrand developers, the town of Schijndel and MVRDV start construction on the Glass Farm, a multifunctional building in the village square. The building with a total surface area of 1600m2 will contain shops, restaurants, offices and a wellness centre. The exterior is printed glass with the motive of a typical local farm; 1,6 times larger than life. Construction will be completed in December 2012. Continue Reading →

Architects Đordje Alfirević and Ana Čarapić shared their proposal for the Museum of Contemporary Art of Vojvodina, Serbia. As a response to the site conditions, their design is positioned in the center of a park with a uniformed impact on the surroundings from every direction.
The circular form establishes a gentle dialog with the environment by means of creating an illusion of neutral form that continuously pulls back, yet on the other hand its compact and abstract volume makes a distinctive and strong landmark. Continue Reading →

First Place of eVolo’s 2012 Skyscraper Competition: ‘Himalaya Water Tower’
Archivenue just shared a Honarable Mentions entry by Bogdan Chipara for the 2012 Skyscraper Competition hosted by eVolo Magazine.
The first place was awarded to Zhi Zheng, Hongchuan Zhao and Dongbai Song from China for their project ‘Himalaya Water Tower’. The proposal is a skyscraper located high in the Himalayan mountain range that stores water and helps regulate its dispersal to the land below as the mountains’ natural supplies dry up. The skyscraper, which can be replicated en masse, will collect water in the rainy season, purify it, freeze it into ice and store it for future use.

eVolo Magazine recently announced the winners of the 2012 Skyscraper Competition. Established in 2006, the annual Skyscraper Competition recognizes outstanding ideas that redefine skyscraper design through the use of new technologies, materials, programs, aesthetics, and spatial organizations, along with studies on globalization, flexibility, adaptability, and the digital revolution.

Their proposal consists of a uniquely suspended building structure described as an “architectural parasite” that leans on neighboring buildings in order to elevate itself above ground. HWKN wins the 2012 Young Architects Program at MoMA PS1 in New York
The Museum of Modern Art and MoMA PS1 have announced the New York based office HWKN (HollwichKushner) as winner of the annual Young Architects Program (YAP) in New York. As winners of the 13th edition of the program, HWKN will construct an outdoor summer installation at the PS1 courtyard in Long Island City, Queens. The winning proposal, known as Wendy, was selected from five finalists and will provide a unique setting for the popular Warm Up summer music series.
