How to Create a Chinese Style Bedroom

Tired of your boring old bedroom decor and want to create something which has both spice and vitality but remains sophisticated and classy? Then perhaps transforming your bedroom with a Chinese theme is the secret to make the place where you spend a large part of your life both exotic and relaxing.

Soothing and Tranquil

Chinese culture is rich with history and tradition, and Chinese decor can by vibrantly elaborate or sublimely understated. The choice is yours, but always remember the common goal of any Chinese style bedroom is that all the differing elements work together in unison to create a tranquil, soothing and uncluttered environment where sleep comes easy and relaxation is key. Here’s how.

Living Colour

Colours are very symbolic in Chinese culture. So when choosing the colour design bear in mind that red means good luck, purple means spirituality, green means peace, yellow means long life and brown means stability. For a Chinese style bedroom it makes sense to invest in some eloquent tapestries, and screens and hangings which depict scenes and symbols from Chinese mythology and culture.

Furnishings

There is a myriad range of furniture that can be used to decorate a Chinese bedroom, but you should always strive for quality rather than quantity and keep it minimalist. Don’t clutter the room but pick items that relate to one another in style and design and above all incorporate Chinese themes. Symmetry and harmony of colour should be your goal. Each piece of furniture, no matter if it is a dresser, cabinet, table, chair, storage box, lantern, rug, bamboo screen or cushion, should be striking in it’s own right but situated in such a way that it does not distract from the effect of the room as a whole.

Lighting

Allow as much natural light into your room as possible by making use of bamboo shades or carved wooden shutters. Hanging Chinese lanterns in the rooms makes for a very dreamy ambience when the sun goes down

The Bed

Obviously the most important part of any bedroom is the bed. When choosing a bed you should bear in mind that in Chinese culture, the bed is considered a haven and sanctuary from the stresses and pressures of life. The one safe place where we can completely relax, unwind, and feel at peace. Choose a bed that is eloquently designed and comfortable enough to lull you to sleep as soon as your head hits the pillow. There are some beds at Time4Sleep that are ideal for a Chinese room, if you don’t want to spend a long time hunting them down.
